I had more than enough time when I was recovering from my laparoscopy last month to read and educate myself on endometriosis. I have never thought twice about using conventional tampons or pads. Who cares about how tampons are made or how they are produced as long as they do their job, right?
The claim that commercial tampons are harmful or possibly cancerous is not an urban legend; it is true. I didn’t realize that cotton is one of the most pesticide-sprayed plants. I was reading a book on how to treat Endometriosis naturally and found the connection between pesticides and Endometriosis. I find it unreal that not until something happens to your health do you figure out that simple things like using a tampon can be very detrimental to you and your fertility.
What is Dioxin? Dioxin is a byproduct of the chlorine bleaching used in the production of most tampons. Dioxin is a carcinogen that settles in fat cells and builds up over time. It’s also linked to cancer, endometriosis, immune system suppression and hormone disruption. I found a great article that gives you more information on Endometriosis and Dioxins from the Endometriosis Association in Wisconsin you can read it here.
So what did I do? I found the best and easiest way to have organic tampons and pads sent to me each month. That’s right girls; it doesn’t take me long to educate myself and make immediate changes because you know your doctor isn’t going to tell you.
GOING BACK TO KALI
Back when I first started my company Fresh Beauty Studio, I worked with Sara Shake from Exposed PR and remembered that she and her business partner Jonna recently launched Kaliboxes.com an organic monthly tampon subscription. I immediately contacted her to try out the Kalibox and to give my body and fertility a healthy break from toxins. I sat down with Sara for a little Q&A style interview on what makes Kaliboxes so unique.

What inspired you to create an organic tampon company?
At first, my partner Jonna and I set out to create a tampon delivery service, similar to what you were seeing with birch box and Dollar Shave Club at the time. It was until we started talking about how we would differentiate our company did the conversation of organic come up. To be honest, like most women, we had never even thought about it. We started to do our research and were shocked at what we were seeing. Chemicals, fragrance, synthetic fibers, possible carcinogens. We often say that once you see what’s actually in a tampon or pad, you can’t unsee it. From that moment, having an organic product became non-negotiable for us, and it helped define the mission behind Kali which was to raise awareness about what is going in your body and the choices that you are making as a woman.
When was your company launched?
Our website went live on November 2nd, 2015 (yes, I remember the day lol) and we shipped our first boxes on December 25th, 2015 to arrive by January 2016. We just celebrated our one year anniversary with the launch of our organic pads, which are now available on the website.
You are donating $1 from every Kali box to the Girl Up Foundation, how did you pick that movement?
We knew that we wanted to align with a charity that benefited women, and the more we learned about the heart of Girl Up, the more we fell in love with them. Not only are the making an incredible impact worldwide, but we are also able to participate with their local chapters of Teen Advisors. It is widely recognized that by educating and empowering adolescent girls, that particular group, can have more impact on their families and communities than any other group.
Besides your website how can women find you? (social media, Youtube?)
We’re very active on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter—you can find us @kaliboxes.
What’s been the response from women? Do you find they are surprised that traditional tampons and pads can be harmful to their bodies?
The response is definitely mixed. Most women (although this number is decreasing!) have no idea that organic tampons and pads are even available. When they take a moment to think about it, you see them begin to process things like, well I work out, I eat organic, I use chemical-free household cleaners, I use all natural makeup…but wait, I’m using traditional tampons or pads…that makes no sense! We’ve seen our share of Aha! Moments.
Is your subscription box available outside of the US?
Right now we only ship within the US, but we are looking forward to shipping internationally in the future.
What’s next for Kalibox?
Our most recent addition is now offering Organic Pads, and every box comes with Organic Panty Liners at no additional charge. We are also SUPER excited for our December box which features a collaboration of non-toxic nail polish with our friends at LVX. We are also gearing up for a fantastic event during Art Basel called GirlTalk, and you can check that out at girltalklounge.com.
WHAT??? Non-toxic nail polish if you know me you know I am obsessed with nail polish! This is fab news for me!
I enjoyed my Kalibox this past month not only did I receive a mix of regular and super organic tampons, but they also include in your monthly box the “Wipette” single paraben and sulfate-free organic cotton wipe to keep ultra fresh and”The Mist” an all natural rose water spray and toner. Using the rose spray gets the meh out of my day and revives my skin. I am excited that they also launched this month organic pads.
I am all about efficiency, and Kaliboxes made my life healthier and easier.
